Religious School - Intermediate Department (Grades 4 Through 7)
Elementary School (Grades 4 through 5)
At this stage, students are ready for a more concentrated, in-depth study of Jewish life. Preliminary exposure to Hebrew in the primary grades is replaced with a more intensive study in our weekday Hebrew School (see below). Bible study, which started with stories from the Torah, continues with a closer look at the history and moral teachings of the prophetic period. We also begin a much deeper analysis of the holidays, of Jewish life cycle events, the concept of holiness and our partnership with God in tikkun olam, the repair of the world.
Middle School (Grades 6 through 7)
During Temple Beth El’s Middle School program, sixth graders study American Jewish history and the Book of Genesis, while seventh graders study Comparative Religions, including Comparative Judaism, and the Book of Exodus. In addition, all students participate in quarterly electives. In sixth grade electives include Israeli folk dance, creation of ritual objects, synagogue music and Current Events in Israel. In seventh grade electives include Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Jewish community and tzedakah/tikkun olam.
Hebrew School Program
Temple Beth El’s mid-week Hebrew School offers a five-year program for Religious School students entering grades 3-7. Our curriculum is oriented towards making every child feel comfortable in the synagogue by helping them in acquiring the ability to read Hebrew fluently, to understand many of the key words, and to chant various prayers. The emphasis is on the acquisition of skills that will last a lifetime, not disappear quickly after Bar/Bat Mitzvah. |
