Israel has been at the forefront of many of our minds this past week. As a community who cares about Israel and is deeply committed to Israel, it is important that we take time to educate ourselves about the relationship between our two homes: The United States and Israel. We encourage you to read as much as you can about President Obama’s speeches and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, D.C. To be committed to Israel means to be educated about Israel.
Here are a variety of political perspectives to explore editorial postings from:

Make a Statement on the Ruling of Municipal Chief Rabbis on Renting to “Gentiles”
ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America) reacts with alarm to a recent report that fifty leading Israeli municipal chief rabbis, all employed by the State, have signed on to a religious ruling which forbids renting homes to gentiles--a move particularly aimed against Arabs. This ruling comes just months after the Chief Rabbi of Safed initiated a call urging Jews to refrain from renting or selling apartments to non-Jews. We ask that you write a letter to the Israeli Ambassador to express your concerns. First some more background.
This letter comes on the heels of a number of bills brought before the Israeli Knesset which are designed to insure that the country remains a Jewish state by isolating Israel's Arab population. Statements by some of the chief rabbis make clear their motives: "We don't need to help Arabs set down roots in Israel," said Rabbi Shlomo Aviner of the Beit El settlement. "Racism originated in the Torah," said Rabbi Yosef Scheinen, who heads the Ashdod Yeshiva. He added that he did not see the move as racist so much as segregationist.
ARZA recognizes with pride the work of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ) and the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) in opposing this statement and others through public protest and legal action.
ARZA calls upon all relevant Israeli governmental bodies to reject and condemn the statement of the chief rabbis. And, we praise those Israeli Orthodox rabbis who have openly criticized the ruling of their colleagues, as well as Israeli politicians who have strongly condemned this statement, including Prime Minister Netanyahu who said that it was forbidden for such comments to be made in a democratic state, "especially in a Jewish democratic state that respects Jewish tradition and the Bible." We hope and pray that all Israelis, no matter their political affiliation or religious practice, will take to heart the words of the Declaration of Independence that called into being the State of Israel, words which calls upon "…the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to preserve peace and participate in the upbuilding of the State on the basis of full and equal citizenship…"
At the very moment when Israel's very existence is being questioned, Israel must not add fuel to that fire by allowing statements or acts that are racist in nature. To do so flies in the face of the Zionist dream and common decency. Reform Judaism rejects the statement of these Orthodox rabbis because it runs counter to our understanding of Judaism and because of our understanding of what the founders of Israel meant when they spoke of a democratic Jewish state.
You can share your thoughts and concerns with Ambassador Michael Oren, Ambassador to the United States from Israel. You can write to him directly at: Ambassador Michael Oren.
Rabbi Robert Orkand, President, ARZA

The wildfire in northern Israel is under control, but the trauma continues: 42 people have died; 20,000+ have been evacuated from homes and businesses. Some 10,000 acres are burned. Israel, a country whose forests comprise only 7% of its land, has lost over 4 million trees. Throughout the dark days of this disaster, and today, as rebuilding begins, Federation partners are taking action. Dear Friends –
Thank you.
Your concern, your passion, and your action led directly to the success achieved today in stopping a Knesset vote on the conversion bill.
No issue in recent memory has so mobilized Reform Jews and, indeed, Jews from all streams and all parts of Israel and the Diaspora as has the bill proposed by MK David Rotem to vest authority for conversions in the hands of the Chief Rabbinate. The overwhelming opposition this bill engendered, as evidenced by the tens of thousands of emails and faxes against the bill received by the Prime Minister's office, is rooted in the conviction that the faith and practices of the overwhelming majority of the world’s Jews must not be delegitimized.
The Knesset has now adjourned until October. While your efforts have helped prevent a vote on the bill this week, there is more to be done. Over the next few months, we will continue to work with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Jewish Agency Chairman Sharansky, and MK Rotem to craft a bill that addresses the problems that currently characterize the conversion process in Israel and that respects all streams of world Jewry. We will keep you informed throughout and hope that we can continue in the future to count on your voice to speak on behalf of our Movement.
With best wishes for a restful and joyful summer, |

Dear Friend,
Emergency is not too strong a word. This week, despite commitments to the contrary, the Israeli Knesset is considering legislation that would fundamentally change the Law of Conversion and further concentrate power with the Chief Rabbinate. The bill would give the Chief Rabbinate exclusive oversight of all conversion matters, putting non-Orthodox conversions performed abroad at risk, and greatly limiting the options available to Israelis and olim (immigrants to Israel) wishing to convert or in need of 'official' recognition. Sadly, this happened within hours of the arrest of Anat Hoffman (Director of the Israel Religious Action Center and Founder of Women of the Wall) for praying at the Western Wall with a Torah scroll, yet another reminder that non-Orthodox Jews don't enjoy the same religious freedom in Israel that we do in North America.
It is critical that Prime Minister Netanyahu hear a loud and clear message from Diaspora Jewry that further alienation of non-Orthodox Jews goes against our deeply held beliefs in Klal Yisrael and creates a dangerous rift between Israel and world Jewry at a time when the relationship between North America and Israel is so vital. We urge you to contact the Prime Minister as soon as possible and share your concern over the future of religious freedom in Israel, the character of the Jewish State, and the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora.
The Union for Reform Judaism, along with our Reform counterparts in Israel and affiliates around the world, will be closely monitoring the legislation over the next few days. We are prepared to take any action at our disposal necessary to prevent passage of this bill. We've dispatched senior members of the Union's staff to join with Rabbi Daniel Allen, ARZA Executive Director, in Israel to personally meet with members of the Knesset and convey to them the significance of this matter. At the same time, our Israeli and international Reform communities are mobilizing as well to convey their concern.
Your email and support are essential to our success. For more information on this issue you can visit http://urj.org/israel/rotem. We hope you will join us in this cause. |
Sincerely, |
 |

ARZA Statement on the Gaza Flotilla Incident, June 1, 2010 |
| |
On May 31, the day when Americans paused to remember those who have fallen in battle, we woke to the difficult news that early that morning Israeli commandos had stopped six ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to Gaza. Five of the ships calmly complied with the stoppage. The sixth ship did not. Please click here to read the entire statement. |
