WELCOME TO THE KEHILLAH PAGE:
A TEEN COMMUNITY
Click here for: Upcoming Teen Events
Kehillah means community, and here at Temple Beth El of South Orange County, Kehillah refers to the Teen Community. The Kehillah Community consists of:
• Temple Beth El Tzaddikim - Our 8th Grade Youth
Philanthropy Board
• DTC: Dynamic Torah Community - 9th and 10th Grade
Confirmation Program
• JETT - 11th and 12th Grade Seminar
• BESTY - our NFTY and USY affiliated youth group
• Madrikhim Leadership Training Program
• M’Shor’rim - Teen Singing Group
• BEMSY
We also encourage our Kehillah to experience the diversity of Jewish life happening in the greater Jewish community, becoming involved with NFTY, USY, interdenominational Jewish events with the BJE, international Jewish programming with the JCC, Maccabiah games, and other great opportunities.
There is a separate Kehillah Brochure available online through the www.tbesoc.org website, but important teen event dates can be found below.

Temple Beth El Tzaddikim
TBE Tzaddikim (Righteous Givers) is essentially a philanthropic foundation of eighth graders who are willing to commit time outside of school to learn about Judaism and difficult social issues and then award $4,000 - $10,000 to organizations that they deem effective in making the world a better place. In this impactful and dynamic program, participants will learn about Jewish wisdom on charitable giving and social change, financial literacy and modern philanthropy.
DTC: Dynamic Torah Community
Temple Beth El Confirmation
DTC, Temple Beth El’s new 9th and 10th grade confirmation program is led by our rabbis and creates a intimate web of teen relationships centered around issues of identity, meaning, and how to best create a more just society. Throughout the year, DTC will engage ancient Jewish wisdom to explore three modern and relevant issues:
1. Ethics and Justice - what is right and fair in a multitude of
personal and political or communal situations.
2. Tribal Identity - how your Jewish core connects you to
cultures around the world.
3. Spirituality and Personal Power - how to connect with
energy and power beyond yourself.
In addition to Tuesday night programming, DTC will participate in a Big Bear Retreat on November 11-13, 2011.
JETT - Jews Exploring Truth Together
Temple Beth El’s post-confirmation Jewish learning program is an opportunity to explore how Jewish wisdom illuminates relevant issues for 11th and 12th graders. Participants gather 4-6 times a year including a Saturday night Havdalah program, a Sunday field trip, shabbaton, and weekend adventure in Los Angeles. We will explore topics such as:
• Jewish Responses To Christianity
• Israel: Security and Democracy
• Explorations of God and Spirituality
• Making Ethical Choices When They Are Not Popular
• Being Jewish At College
The program is led by the Temple Beth El Rabbis and is co-created with teens.
Madrichim Program
The M.I.T program (Madrichim in Training) is the prerequisite for teen involvement in the Madrichim program. Madrichim serve as teacher assistants in our Shabbat Chai and Hebrew programs. They assist the teachers while learning to facilitate classroom activities as well as plan and teach lessons on their own. Madrichim will meet with their coordinator, Sherri Krause, on a bi-weekly basis (Tuesday evenings).

M’Shor’rim
The singers of songs—”making a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Trains post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students with a passion for chanting our beautiful Shabbat liturgy and an aptitude for singing to become “junior cantors.” They lead the music of Friday evening service once each month, as well as the annual multi-generational service on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Coordinated and led by Cantor Shula Kalir-Merton.
BESTY grades 8 through 12
BESTY (Beth El Senior Temple Youth) is for students in 8th through 12th grades. Students meet informally on a bi-weekly basis on Tuesday evenings for lounge nights, special events and monthly Shabbat dinners. Our Youth Group Board helps to plan programs and events. Our Youth Group members are encouraged to participate in regional and national Youth Groups such as: The Bureau‘s Talit program, the Conservative Movement‘s United Synagogue Youth (USY), and the Reform Movement‘s National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY).

BEMSY grades 6 and 7
BEMSY is our Youth Group for 6th & 7th graders. The group will meet on Shabbat Chai Fridays from 4:00-4:45 pm in our Youth Lounge. 6th & 7th graders will have an opportunity to schmooze with friends, buy a slice of pizza, play pool or basketball. This time will also include a ‘camp-like’ Shabbat ritual designed especially for BEMSY.
In addition to Shabbat Chai Fridays, BEMSY will meet for fun and festive Shabbat dinners in our Youth Lounge, go out ‘On the Town’ for social activities, and meet up with other 6th & 7th graders from all over Orange County at events hosted by the OC Bureau of Jewish Education.
